Blow-drying, flat ironing, curling OH MY! We’ve all done it… you know, used a little too much heat on our hair. If you’re anything like me, it is not until you have lost your curl pattern or your hair is frizzy beyond the normal FRIZZ that you attempt to fix the issue. Hey, don’t judge me (slowly hangs head in shame). While the struggle is real when it comes to heat damage, not all is lost if you have flat ironed your leave out fifteen times this week! To those of you who are wondering what a leave out is, it is the hair that is left out when a partial sew in has been installed. Anyway back to nursing your manes back to health after applying too much heat. Here are three tips to help revive your tresses.

Tip #1

The best tip for any problem is prevention, so our first suggestion is using a heat protectant. You may be thinking… umm, it’s too late for that, and proceed to roll your eyes; however, it’s not too late to begin using heat protecting products. Using a good heat protectant will help prevent further damage of the heat scorched hair and the new growth. Just be aware that a heat protectant does not completely stop your mane from being harmed by your thermal styling, think of an umbrella; it will keep you dry when you have moderate rain, but in a monsoon it will do NOTHING! So keep this in mind when deciding if you should apply heat.

Tip #2

Treatments. These will aid you in healing your wounded strands. Since heat styling removes the moisture from your hair, which causes the damage, adding moisture back into the hair is key. A moisturizing treatment like a hair mask will coat your strands and provide the moisture needed to revive your mane. Treatments that can be tricky are protein treatments. These treatments should be used with caution, an abundance of protein can cause the hair to become brittle and break leading to more damage. We DO NOT need that type of negativity in our lives!

Tip #3

This last tip may not be easy to do depending on the texture of your hair, and you might say, “really, if I wanted to do this, I wouldn’t be having this issue”, nonetheless I’m still going to suggest it. Refrain from using heat! There, I said it! Making the choice not to used heated styling tools will preserve the health of your hair. Not to say that you should never use heat, because who doesn’t like having versatility in their hairstyles? But limiting the heat will keep your mane soft and free of heat damage.
